Family Centered Newborn Guide

Dallas Fort Worth Lifestyle Newborn Photography

Hey Mama

Welcoming a new baby can be overwhelming, but planning your newborn session doesn’t have to be. You might be wondering what exactly a family centered newborn session is, or perhaps you aren’t sure how soon after birth a newborn session should take place. What should everyone wear? Does the house need to be spotless? As your Dallas Fort Worth newborn photographer, I'm here to answer all those questions, simplify the process and give you a stress-free experience that results in a beautiful set of images full of your family’s love and connection.

What is a Family Centered Newborn Session?

Family centered newborn photography, also known as lifestyle newborn photography, is a more laid back approach to documenting your new baby. The session typically takes place in your home and includes the entire family, pets are welcome too! Lots of snuggles, sibling interactions and fresh baby details. The images not only showcase your adorable little one but also capture all the joy your family shares as you soak up those fleeting newborn days.

"What timing is best?"

With my relaxed approach to newborn photography the timing isn’t super strict. Some families choose to do their session when baby is 1-2 weeks old, others prefer to wait a bit longer. There are pros to each timeframe. Younger babies are often nice and sleepy, making it easier to get those adorable sleeping baby pics. Older babies are more awake and you get more photos of those beautiful eyes and maybe even a smile.

What Should baby Wear?

Sweet & Simple

A onesie, gown or other cozy outfit is a simple choice that photographs beautifully.

Bare Baby

That new baby skin is so soft, lets show it off! Just a diaper or a neutral blanket is all you need.

Swaddled

Grab your favorite swaddle and its baby burrito time! Pro tip, the stretchy, jersey knit swaddles work best. Headbands or hats are a great addition.

Fancy Pants

Dress baby up in your favorite outfit or even an heirloom piece.

“What should the rest of us wear?”

Since the session will take place in your home its always a good idea to look around and see what colors coordinate best. You can’t go wrong with neutrals, but don’t be afraid to throw in a few pops of color. Most importantly, keep comfort in mind.

"Where are we going to shoot? Does my home have to be spotless?"

Every session is different, but most frequently I use a living area, bedroom and baby’s nursery. There’s no need to stress by trying to clean and get your home looking perfect. A little tidying can be helpful, removing items from nightstands, etc, but those diaper boxes in the corner, no problem at all.

Day of Session Tips

Warm it up

Adjust your house to be a bit warmer than usual, babies hate being cold.

Fill that baby belly

As close to session time as possible, change baby’s diaper and get them ready in one of your chosen outfits. After changed, feed baby. A full baby is a happy baby.

Keep it light hearted

If siblings are going to be involved try and keep your attitude toward the session relaxed and positive. Talk about the session being fun. I often suggest tickles and acting silly to get young kiddos involved. This method works much better than trying to force a smile.

Take a break

Sessions typically last around 1-2 hours. Breaks are common for feeding baby and outfit changes. If you are breastfeeding and want me to keep shooting, I’m always happy to include nursing images.
